IST Central is the Web Portal. It contains a suite of tools and resources for the IST program.
This web portal is currently funded, and coded by myself, Brian K. Miller.
I develop this resource, and others in my free time, after work,
on the weekends, and during vacations in an effort to make the IST program the best in the nation.
This resource is used by my IST students as a training tool, resource pool,
and it is a resource center for all of my work.
The web portal offers some interesting application developement as it is integrated with a Windows Domain, lab pc's, IoT devices, Virtual machines, Hardware API's, etc.
This integration allows, users to create their own accounts, manage their computer logins, wifi access,
reset passwords, email and sms alerts, assignments, quizes, research, projects, grades, schedules etc. It also creates morphing Network profiles, which adapt to users academic performance,
allowing greater access to bandwidth, network resources, and the internet, or focused access which penalizes bandwith, and restricts access to specific course related content.
istConnect is part of the suite of tools found in the web portal.
istConnect is the student / teacher connector. It's purpose is to organize student schedules, studies and accounts.
other web based applications are available such as Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and others, however, they didn't offer what I needed and that is why I programmed one specifically
my needs. istConnect far surpasses the formentioned applications.
istConnect is integrated with the Windows Domain. This integration allows a student to create and manage their student account such as, resetting forgotten passwords.
temporary passwords are emailed and/or sent via text sms message to the students phone. The next time they login to an integrated computer they are asked to create a new password.
Students manage their wifi connections with istConnect.
istConnect also tracks attendance as the student logs in at arrival to class and logs out on departure. Several layers of intelligence are key to this mechanism, for example, student schedules
have to be known by the system.
A student can use istConnect to get a human readable and printable schedule that is very straight forward and understandable by a larger percentage of students.
istFastlane is part of the suite of tools found in the web portal.
istFastlane is a clever and ingeneous mechanism for granting dynamic, live Quality of service and internet access to students that perform well on written tests.
The tests, ofcourse, are integrated into the system. Students log-in to istConnect and load a test through istFastlane, which dynamically writes rules (filters) to the network hardware.
eg. routers, switches, bridges, wifi access points etc. These network filters are bound to the individual student. Essentially when the student answers a question correctly
they get bumped up to a higher internet connection speed. When they answer incorrectly the student is bumped down and experiences slower connection speeds.
Answering incorrectly enough times will totally reduce a connection to zero, effectively unplugging the students connection to the internet.
While a Student can perform excellent on these tests and achieve maximum connectivity speeds, the program continuously degredates the connection until the student is forced to test
again if they want to enjoy a fast connection to the internet.
istFastlane is one of a kind.
istAward is part of the suite of tools found in the web portal.
istAward is a fascinating method for granting full access to the internet only during break time, lunch, and before and after school.
During classtime, only curriculum related web sites are allowed.
istAward creates hardware filters based on students grades and professionalism marks. "A" students with a Grade of A or higher (exceeding the expectations of the teacher) have full access all the time
because they have prooven they are responsible in their academic duties, on time, respectful. etc.
An unlimited range of criteria could be used to create these hardware filters.
istCyberfront is part of the suite of tools found in the web portal.
istCyberfront is an emersing methodology for Cyber Security Students to get hands on experience with the ever looming threat of "internet as an organism".
The concept of the net as a nueral network of continual infection and contamination allows a cyber security professional to approach this topic less haphazzardly and
take this area of study very seriously.
istCyberfront contains many application based excercises, demonstrating how to mitigate risk by knowing who and what may be attacking your network. Excercises demonstrating many topics such as;
vulnerabilities, exploits, vectors, threats, assets, modals, methods, motives, etc. are studied in depth with istCyberfront
istC-Core is part of the suite of tools found in the web portal.
istC-Core is the Curriculum Core content available in all digital format.
istMiniD is an extension of DETER.
istMiniD is under development and a small version of the large DETER virtual network.
DETER labs hosts a large research network which is used for testing cyber attacks in a contained virtual network.
As cyber investigators these researchers constiture the DETER research scientists and researchers of the larger global
community.
The DETER project is part of the University of Southern California under the Verbiti School of Engineerings' Information Sciences Center.
ISI is involved in many diverse projects and played a vital role in the creation of the modern internet.
Due to the Complexity of the DETER testbed,
DETER has charged the IST program at The Workshop Learning Center with the responsibility of creating a testbed at the community college level.
Their interest is simply to create a testbed that is deployable by students, at the community college level, college and university level, and possibly at the high school level.
